’99 F150 – 4R70W Transmission fluid and filter change

I checked the service record and it has been 8 years since the transmission fluid was changed in the truck. 🙁    It has only been changed once in 206000 miles and it was performed at a quick lube place so they just sucked the fluid out through the dipstick, which is completely useless.  That only removes 6 of the 13 quarts and leaves the old dirty filter untouched.  The torque converter has a drain plug, thank goodness, I drained 7 quarts out of the converter and 6 quarts out of the transmission.  Pretty uneventful except the old filter o-ring was stuck in the transmission, you can see it in the photo, the orange rubber ring in the hole, a small flat head screwdriver convinced it to vacate the transmission.  Such a messy job, no matter how hard you try you will get transmission fluid all over you.  I wanted to use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, but I could not find it in a gallon jug, it is just to expensive by the quart.

Products used:

  • 12 quarts of Valvoline MAX Life Synthetic ATF
  • One quart of Lucas Transmission Fix
  • New filter
