’99 F150 – Really bad brakes

Well, the grabbing feeling going down the highway was solved.  The front right brake lower sliding pin was rusted closed.  I am not sure how this is even possible, but at some point in time I pressed the brakes and they locked closed on the front right.  This destroyed the inner pad and was causing a grabbing while driving.  I am really surprised I did not have more damage.  The sliding pin was completely rusted in place.  I soaked it for several hours with penetrating oil, that did not help.  I heated it with a torch and that did not work.  So, I attached a vice grip to the pin and placed a scissor jack under the vice grip it started lifting the entire front of the truck up.  I thought this was going to work or something is going to break.  But, it did work and the pin was finally removed.  I cleaned the pin with emory cloth and the hole with steel wool and a flat head screwdriver.  I made sure all the pins were properly lubed this time.  I changed all brake pads on the trucks.  Yes, I should probably have turned the rotors, but I think at the next brake change I will just replace them.

Products used:

  • 4 sets of NAPA brake pads
  • One quart of Prestone synthetic DOT 3 brake fluid
  • Small amount of Mobil 1 Grease for the sliding pins
