It was a rainy afternoon on the way home from work and the wipers suddenly stopped working and I could spell hot wiring. I just thought maybe they were a little stressed and I blew a fuse. I checked the fuses they were fine, I could hear the motor strain when turned on. So the surgery began, boy was it a surgery. The wiper assembly and motor are on the inside of the firewall near the window. So the dash has to some loose to get to the top bolts. I also had to remove the AM radio, heater controls, steering wheel, clock, and one of the AC vents. Finally, after a few hours, I pulled the whole thing out. What had stopped the wipers was not a dead motor, but a loose bolt. One of the three bolts that hold the motor to the assembly had backed out and stopped the movement of the wiper arms. I am almost glad this happened; while the assembly was off the car I checked the little gear boxes under the wiper arm and the grease was completely hardened. So this gave me an opportunity to lube everything and add Loctite to the bolts. The motor seems to be undamaged and works great. I think because the motor is huge, almost the size of the starter.
