About three years ago we purchased an in-ground pool, a fiberglass pool. So, the surface of this thing is like the surface of a bass boat, just gel coat. About a month after installation, I noticed the pool color under the water was starting to fade. After about three months the fading was very apparent. The surface was also eroding away, it was starting to get rough to the touch instead of smooth. You can see in the ‘before’ photos the normal color around the top of the pool that was not exposed to water, while the color below the water line is very faded. The pool has a 20-year “surface” warranty. So after a few years talking with the warranty guys they scheduled a time for the big pool refinish. The method they use to refinish a pool is very interesting, they use a blow torch. The fire comes from the parameter of the gun, very small rubber pellets shoot from the center of the gun. As the pellets pass through the flames they liquefy; so the guys are essentially painting with rubber. After draining the pool we discovered we had a LOT of water still under the pool, I guess my sump pump is not deep enough. They had to drill a 2″ hole in the bottom of the pool to relieve the pressure. They spent about a full day sanding the pool, then another full day applying an epoxy that bonds the new rubberized coating with the old gel coat. Last was almost 2 days of spraying on the new finish. It turned out very beautiful. It is a lot darker than I thought it would be, but I really like the color. I love the orange peel rubberized feeling of the surface, it feels really nice to the feet also. The guys a Latham Pools did a really good job.
I have some pretty good videos of the whole process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmHbsBCTIbk&list=PLeYV2QusFCQhf6bLbIJMkBbdp9BPadJoy
